During February, we're studying John Philip Sousa and his marches, as well as songs of the U.S. military.

 

Activity 1: Learn about John Philip Sousa  

Listen to a short radio program to learn more about American composer John Philip Sousa (1854-1932.)  Click on the link to access the Classics for Kids Sousa programs.

Activity 2: Listen to famous Sousa Marches

Activity 3:  Listen to U.S. military songs  

U.S. Marine Hymn "From the Halls of Montezuma"

Sousa conducted the U.S. Marine band.  Here is the Marine hymn (not composed by Sousa.)

U.S. Army "The Caisson Song"

Activity 4:  Listen to the President's march  

"Hail to the Chief" is a march that honors the president of the United States (who, of course, lives in the White House in Washington, D.C.)  This march is played at special state functions to signal the president's arrival.  In this video, watch U.S. Army Band herald trumpet perform.
